Operating system data is a set of functions which allows a variety of software to run efficiently on computers. The functions support functions like managing processes, memory management, device management and file systems, as well security and monitoring of performance.

The primary function of the OS is managing CPU time and hardware resources. The OS determines which programs get the processor’s attention and regulates how programs interact with one in order to not interfere with each other. This involves scheduling the execution of processes and choosing the order in that applications will be executed, and making sure that each process has enough memory to execute its program.

Memory management is managed by certain operating systems employing techniques like paging and segmentation. These techniques divide memory into sections that are then mapped into or out of RAM according to the requirement. This technique can increase RAM without requiring new hardware.

Operating systems also have to manage output and input from devices like disk drives, printers and disk drives. The OS manages communication between applications and hardware by installing and managing device drivers. It also creates a table known as the device-status desk, which keeps track of the devices that are ready for writing or reading, and the number of processes that are waiting for them.

The operating system manages long-term non-volatile storage on devices such as disks and cassettes. It manages access to files and their organization, optimizes use of storage devices, and maintains security and permissions for users.
